Hysteroscopy is a technique to examine the inside of the uterus (the womb) and diagnose or treat various uterine problems. It involves the insertion of a thin, lighted telescope-like instrument called a hysteroscope through the vagina into the womb.
Hysteroscopy is most commonly used to look for the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. It is also used to investigate cause of recurrent miscarriages, infertility, or other uterine abnormalities.
Hysteroscopy is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia or sedation, meaning most patients can go home the same day.
The hysteroscope allows the healthcare provider to visually inspect the uterine cavity, identify abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions (scar tissue), or uterine septum (a partition within the uterus), which can be removed simultaneously also.
